The Watergate scandal was a political scandal during the 1970s in the United States resulting from the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement. Effects of the scandal eventually led to the resignation of Richard Nixon, the President of the United States, on August 9, 1974; this has been the only resignation of a U.S. President. The scandal also resulted in the indictment, trial, conviction and incarceration of several top Nixon administration officials.The affair began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate complex on June 17, 1972. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) connected the payments to the burglars to a slush fund used by the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, a fundraising group for the Nixon campaign.[1][2] As evidence mounted against the president's staff, which included former staff members testifying against them in an investigation conducted by the Senate Watergate Committee, it was revealed that President Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices and that he had recorded many conversations.[3][4] Recordings from these tapes implicated the president, revealing that he had attempted to cover up the break-in.[2][5] After a series of court battles, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the president had to hand over the tapes to government investigators; he ultimately complied.Facing near-certain impeachment in the House of Representatives and a strong possibility of a conviction in the Senate, Nixon resigned the presidency on August 9, 1974.[6][7] His successor, Gerald Ford, then issued a pardon to President Nixon.

A Dallas deputy police officer by the name of Seymour Weiztman recognized him (Barker) during the time of the Watergate scandal. On the day of the assassination of President Kennedy, Weitzman had been the first police officer to run up to the picket fence area seconds after the last shots. There he found a man who displayed Secret Service credentials. Weitzman claims this man was Bernard Barker.Great documentary Ken - thanks for the link!

Often we have seen the actors of one drama re-emerge into another similar drama. IMO Nixon got his just deserts. The Bush, Sr. team that was in place in Iraq war #1, re-emerged ten years later to do Iraq war #2. The question to ask in a crisis is how have we seen this type of event in the past, and who stands to profit?JFK murder--who benefitted? The mafia, wealthy oil interests, the "intelligence" community, the military, LBJ, whose political obituary was about to be written because of Bobby Baker and other scandals.Watergate--who benefitted? Gerald Ford, the anti-war community, Kissinger, the liberal intelligensia and politicians.

The old story on Watergate was that Richard Nixon's "plumbers" broke into the DNC headquarters and were caught. Then Nixon instigated a cover up and then was brought down by the enterprising journalism of Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. The NEW story on Watergate is that military intelligence and the FBI KNEW IN ADVANCE through sources that the break-in was about to occur, then sat by as they set a spider web trap for Nixon's plumbers. Then the intelligence agencies and Mark Felt of the FBI, worked in concert to manipulate the media (Woodward and Bernstein) and thus TAKE DOWN President Nixon. The big question that folks ask now is: WHY? As in WHY did key players in intelligence and at the high levels of the FBI want to see Richard Nixon crucified? If the Watergate scandal had blossomed earlier in 1972 as opposed to coming to a head in 1973-74, then we and (they) might have had George McGovern as president. I don't think those folks would have liked that. Gerald Ford was known as the FBI's man on the Warren Commission and in 1970 Newsweek called Ford the CIA's man in Congress. So a Gerald Ford is someone both the CIA and FBI would want as president. Ford, CIA, FBI all had key roles in covering up the JFK assassination. The thing that really stands out about this book is the almost unbelievable amount and variety of crimes that the author Robert Merritt and his boss DC police officer Carl Shoffler were committing as part of COINTELPRO. Carl Shoffler in particular was a mega-criminal military intelligence officer placed in the Washington, DC police. Apparently, this kind of sheepdipping and planting of intelligence agents is common. I think it is criminal. The Justice Dept and the intelligence agencies in 2010-11 did NOT want to see this book written. Both author Robert Merritt's and Doug Caddy's phone lines were tapped and among other things, the intelligence agencies engaged in "spoofing" on their phones lines. "Spoofing" is usually when criminals in government (so-called "intelligence agencies) mess with your phone line and let you KNOW they are listening in by the unusual amount of weird beeps, phone disconnects and basically just funny noise on your phone line. I suppose it's just an attempt to "spook" or "intimidate" whoever's phone they are messing with. "Spoofing" is the least of what these governmental criminals do as this book attests to. Quick note: Both Confidential Informant Robert Merritt and his boss the mega-criminal intelligence agent/police officer Carl Shoffler were homosexual lovers. Shoffler also used Merritt to have sex with 70 men in order to compromise them. One blockbuster news of this book is that mega-criminal Carl Shoffler and other CIA agents tried to get Robert Merritt to murder author Doug Caddy back in 1973. Caddy had been the lawyer for E. Howard Hunt and the original Watergate burglars. Caddy is also a homosexual. Shoffler and the CIA criminals thought it would be a super idea if C.I. Merritt would have gay sex with Caddy and at the same time stick a poison pill in Caddy's rectum in order to assassinate him. Apparently, criminal "intelligence" thought that Caddy as Hunt's lawyer knew too many dirty CIA/intelligence secrets. They may have feared that Caddy had been told about CIA participation in the JFK assassination or numerous other intelligence crimes. Also, remember that the JFK assassination is the dirty little non-secret of US intelligence and the highest levels of both political parties (Lyndon Johnson - killer, George Herbert Walker Bush - CIA killer, Gerald Ford - cover up, Richard Nixon - knew the truth.) Go to p. 199 in this book and get a taste for the dreadful amount of crimes that Carl Shoffler was having Robert Merritt commit. There is also a section on Carl Bernstein's perverted sex life. I get the feeling that Robert Merrit was intentionally trying to embarrass Bernstein with these details. Fine with me, I like the "juicy" info! This is a MUST-BUY book for students of history, academics, journalists, criminal intelligence agents, and folks who like a good story. Sometimes on events like Watergate and the JFK assassination it takes a long time -decades even- for the truth to come out. This book is part of that process. Nixon was in on that intelligence wise, no role though. He realized everyone with stakes in the matter did not want the JFK Conspiracy to blow up. I read that in the middle of the crisis Nixon called up LBJ to get him to "call off the dogs", and threatened to expose LBJ for some of his misdeeds like having Nixon's campaign plane bugged.
