FBI Kept Records On Cronkite

Below is a link to an article that came out today.What is interesting to me is that records were kept on Cronkite in the first place. Why? And why were they destroyed? The article implies it was a simple oversight and historians are bummed that historical information was destroyed, and that 'innocent' perspective may indeed by true.But isn't it more likely that the FBI was protecting Cronkite's associations, with say the FBI or the CIA or his 'masters'? CBS was (is) essentially a CIA operation. and it would seem likely that 'the must trusted man in America' was an eager, knowledgeable and willing operative.The FBI revelation, I think, is more evidence supporting that contention.
