Tom, Donald Gibson in The Creation of the Warren Commission in The Assassinations ed. by Jim DiEugenio and Lisa Pease writes that Johnson said, "Eugene Rostow called the White House on November 24th and suggested a commission, and that Joe Alsop and Dean Rusk also recommended a commission. This account, although brief and incomplete, was closer to the truth than anything said about this between 1963 and 1993. . . .The commission idea comes from Rostow, Alsop, and Acheson. It has immediate support from individuals at the Washington Post (James Wiggins) and the New York Times (James Reston). The idea is then supported by Secretary of State, Dean Rusk."We know Johnson and Hoover were friends and neighbors for years, had dinner together once a week, shared an enmity towards JFK and faced jeopardy from his prospective reelection. Johnson would have been dropped from the ticket and faced jail over Billy Sol Estes and Bobby Baker investigations. Hoover would have been removed as Director by the person he most despised. The pair had guilty knowledge and needed to cement the coup d'etat. Johnson leaned on Warren, and installed Dulles, McCloy and Ford to insure the end result. Hoover made his agents understand what evidence he wanted, and that anything else was career-ending.And yet the two would die of heart attacks, Hoover in 72, Johnson in 73, and Nixon would be booted in 74; leaving the CIA as the last man standing. So much for shattering it into a million pieces.
