This interview is very good background for those who have not read it yet:
http://archive.azcentral.com/specials/s ... ter.htmlIt could be said that much of what he said was with the benefit of hindsight, but it seems truer today than when he actually talked in 1986.

Could you imagine Barry Goldwater in today's Republican party? He would be considered a "left-leaning" Republican. He would probably lose in a primary versus a Tea Party candidate. Goldwater was part of a Congress that was able to cross party lines and get things done. It is totally opposite today. Polls show that Congress is now at an all-time low in ratings. It's around 5%. That's what happens when politicians can be bought off so easily, thanks to our NOT SO Supreme Court. By the way, no one on the Supreme Court should be given a lifetime term. That is totally ludicrous. The judges should be scrutinized every four years, just like the politicians. Speaking of being bought off, I can name two judges on the Supreme Court who truly are. Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. I've posted this before, but did you know in the famous Bush v. Gore case, that Scalia had two sons working on the Bush legal team. Yet he didn't recuse himself. Clarence Thomas' wife was on the Bush transition team, yet he also didn't recuse himself.
