I just finished reading LTC Daniel Marvin's book: "Expendable Elite. One Soldier's Journey Into Covert Warfare". As a German, who was born soon after what the author is reporting, the vietnam war 1965/66 and how it really was to be on top secret mission there as a Green Beret of the US special forces and as a striker, elite soldier or inhabitant of the south vietnamese Hoa Hao people, it is moving, enlightening, exciting and question-raising to experience, how different war-reality can be from official propaganda or from common public image, how much people can grow into the extremes under extreme conditions - to the bad, to the good - and how similar the betrayal of the top US government+army+ss-guys towards the troops on the ground was to the same of the German "elite" to the German elite+regular soldiers some 20 years before. The "elite" behind the desks and the microphones just used the real elite warriors as well as heroic infantry, who had good beliefs and trust in their heart, only to burn them on field or dangerous missions and stab them into the back, as soon as they seemed to be useless, replacable, "expendable", after they had done their job, no matter whether according or not according to the wishes of the mighties, to keep career and war profiteering machine running, without any mercy for human lifes or care for honor. There are several momenti, which make this book remarkable: - a deeply reflecting and self-reflecting while prosaic and authentic and nevertheless lively way of writing- a true report about how Dangerous Dan's former elite-soldiers made friends with the south vietnamese people of the Hoa Hao by respect and civic actions from the beginning, protected them with their life from the vietcong and even from impending intentional friendly fire, cooperated excellently with the south vietnamese troops and elite soldiers, all this thanks to the leadership and humanly qualities of the author and his collegue Major Le and many others on both sides, which showes, that belief, love and respect are stronger than any national or racial borders - the report about the author's resistance to follow the top secret order from president Johnson via CIA for a suicide assassination attempt on cambodian crown prince Sihanouk, to be able to blame the vietcong for that, because he dared to demand the end of the hypocrite US-policy to keep sanctuaries for the enemy in Cambodia along the vietnamese border. - the betrayal of his troop and mission by the CIA and by the president and the last minute rescue of them and the Hoa Hao by a south vietnamese Major and LTG - the author's personal struggle to escape the tries of the CIA, to keep him out, to exlude him from the SFA and to destroy his book about all that- the question raising: what does elite really mean? What's the responsibility of each of us, no matter in which position and on which mission? What's the demand on you, if you really want to do your best? Will it always and for all times be necessary for humans to go through war and it's extremes first to be able to reckognize what it takes to keep justice and peace? To me this act of speaking out and defending oneself from a wrong concept of secret services, who have become immorale and out of people's control, is heroic and necessary and exactly what brings a presently failed money-dictated-system like the US back to integrity and reputation again. It's the wrong concept to demand unconditional obediance and bless any order from high up, no matter how criminal it might be. No, only co-thinking, self-responsible, honorable men and women, who resist immoral orders even at the risk of their lifes, are what we need. Humans are no numbers, their heart, feelings, motivations, beliefs, rights, dignity and divinity is what counts, individually and for all, and that is the only really existing. That's what Daniel Marvin's book is affirming inside of me.

Nice review Chris...and it IS a GREAT book. I am also glad that Dan sometimes joins us in the forum, and that he also a a MAJOR reference in terms of the Jimmy Files story.

Let me add, that LTC Green Beret (ret.) Daniel Marvin's book "Expendable Elite. One Soldier's Journey into Covert Warfare" does not reflect that much about the soul, beliefs and fate of the former enemy, the vietcong. At that time they were his enemy, threating his friends and his belief.Communism was bad, capitalism was good. But in the age of Maoism, the real "socialistic" regimes often had real capitalisms as party bosses and real antisocial terror and "reeducation" towards the own population. So this was also a question of defending humanity. But what if the real transfer of the idea of being social and supporting by state is really good? What about the true life and hopes of the humans, who were ordered to be enemies to somebody? Would have Daniel Marvin gone to war at all, if he would have been conscious in his youthtime already, that the money guys in this world often stir conflicts with millions of deaths just to have war profits?

I don't think true elite is expendable. That's why I ask you Americans to do your best to remove fake elite from high positions. One first step would be to work for the change of Constitution, so that private investment banking is forbidden and all income from interest rates of fresh printed money goes into common benefit. Property means obligation to welfare.
