James D: DeBugging History Part 9

Post by Phil Dragoo »

"his conclusion. . .appears to have been reached a priori. . . ."Having just read Jim DiEugenio's ninth round of landing punches on the reeling Pugliosi, I must say it's an excellent graduate seminar in undoing the assassination of truth which has plagued America for five decades. The author makes the vital point that Bugliosi is "not a trained historian, but a trained lawyer"--hence, history is not a continuum to be explored and explained but "a case to win"--where have we seen that before--Posner. I find Bugliosi's bodacious title Reclaiming History would be more accurately rendered to reflect its Big Brotherian intent to revise history, to excise the inconvenient--just as CIA, FBI, Warren et al have done.DiEugenio in typical fashion--he is continually the sifter of all the sand--demonstrates Bugman's persistent omission of all inconvenient evidence and selective inclusion of only that which advances the prosecution's case--even if Bugsy has to soup it up with his secret sauce. And of all the DeBergerac "and as I end the refrain, thrust home" events, the tastiest is in outing the Bug-eyed denial of the maddening success of the crusaders for truth:The reality that Bugliosi is trying to turn upside down is that the progress the critics have made has been done with both miniscule money and reach and in spite of the mainstream media. In other words, by the value of their arguments. The author finishes up with a shrug at Bug's bizarre use of the JAMA Lundberg libel--and his twist on Kilgallen.I found the JAMA saga in Assassination Science to be very satisfying--victory through persistence--followed later by Lundberg run out of his editor's office for his laughable "oral sex not sex, say college students" nonsense.I never forget that Johnson, having got his war, proceeded to lose it by destructive confliction: he sanitized his own target lists, and he cursed his own joint chiefs Nov 65 when they came for permission to do what he himself had once planned: mine Haiphong and bomb Hanoi. (The Day It Became The Longest War)Mar 68 LBJ does a version of what Nixon would do 8 Aug 74.So why do the Wizard of Poz and the Bug Man do what they do? Because CIA means never having to say you're sorry.
