A May 1963 XP-100 Fireball

Post by Freddy Janes »

Stumbled onto this posting in a Gunbroker.com forum .. found it rather interesting...

Does anyone know anyone who might have access to an original, pre-1963, pre-production prototype XP-100 that chambered the .222 Remington cartridge rather than the .221 Fireball?

Or am I on a hopeless quest? I'd pay a reasonable price for a spent .222 cartridge fired (provably) from a pre-1963 prototype .222 XP-100, to compare with a shell I have in my possesion from a famous crime scene.

I'm also looking for very high quality, close-up photos of early XP-100s.

Also, do I understand correctly that the XP uses an IDENTICAL bolt, firing pin, etc., as the earlier Remington 600 rifle?

Is this also identical to the 700 (release same year as XP)?

Most importantly, is there ANY way to tell the differentiate a shell fired from this vintage XP-100 from a .222 fired from another gun?

As you might be able to tell, I'm no gun expert, just an editorial researcher. That's why I've come here. I would very much appreciate any assistance,
